MAMAVATION MONDAY – HEALTHY LIVING: A FAMILY AFFAIR

My sister is pissed off at me. She thinks I’m mean and irrational. Maybe I am, because I snapped on her. Oh yes I did. A full on “Sista Girl” episode at 9:30 am on a Tuesday morning. Why? Because she was feeding my 2 year old, her precious nephew, Chili Cheese Corn Chips.

You might have Corn Chips for breakfast, but we don’t. And there she was giving him one after another like and old lady feeding popcorn to pigeons. When I made her stop, he freaked out. Of course, he wanted more. They are DELICIOUS. Explaining moderation to a 2 year old is impossible, so now he was mad, I was mad, my sister was mad. I snapped on her and now she thinks I suck.
She’s one of those “Skinny/Fat” people. You know the ones that can cram all sorts unhealthy fattening food into their faces and never seem to have any consequence. She can eat anything she wants, but I’ve never been that person. My husband isn’t that person, and so far we have no indication that our son will be that person. And why risk it? He doesn’t need to eat that stuff anyhow. I’m sure the junk food industry has plenty of other fans to profit from.

At our pediatrician’s recommendation we recently switched him to skim milk. We work hard to get his dietary recommendations in throughout the week and to make sure that he is learning to love healthy snacks not just junk. We’re enjoying that sweet spot right now, where junk food ignorance is bliss. Our kid doesn’t know that candy and cookies are delicious. He likes healthy food right now because he doesn’t know anything else is out there. So seeing my sister sabotaging our efforts was just too much.

The other night when Dom decided to wake mama up at 2 am. I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I started reading the book sent to me from the Mamavation Sistahood, “Growing Up Healthy The Next Generation Way” by Dr. Mary Ellen Renna. Along with some outstanding diet and exercise information that I found really helpful, she says during the introduction, “There is now an overall decline in the health of the present generation of children in the U.S.” and that “People around the world are exposed to more and more nutritionally deficient foods, creating an increasingly unhealthy population.” Do you think Chili Cheese Corn Chips would make that “nutritionally deficient food” list? I sure do.

Maintaining a healthy diet is going to stay a key focus in our house. It’s working for us so far, so we have no reason to jump off the healthy eating train. This week is going to be really busy because I have comedy shows, plus a major event going on at work, so I’m just going to try to stay hydrated, eat as clean as I can and just focus on running this week. To stay on track with my Half Marathon training I need to log 17.5 miles this week, so that’s the workout goal I’m shooting for.
Dom has forgotten about the Corn Chips for now. My sister, well, her memory is a little longer, but since she’s 19, I think taking her shopping might help her get over our little spat. I’m not above a little sisterly bribery.

See ya in the produce isle.

Mamavation Monday – Not Running on Empty

What a crazy week. Crazy, but in a good way. I had some successes at work, some successes on the comedy stage and some successes in health.
What I’ve focused on over the last two weeks is my attitude. I’m changing my thought process to focus on Positives rather than Negatives. No more “Oh No, How and I going to run this race,” to “I can’t wait to run this race.”

I think that the attitude change has really helped me feel more at piece in a lot of areas in my life and taken a way some of the anxiety that was making me dread my workouts instead of enjoy them like I used to. Also, I’ve lost another 3 pounds with was my primary goal, but has been a welcome bi-product of me healthy diet and exercise program.

This week, I’m continuing my workout routine. I plan to log 12 miles of running this week, plus at least 2 days of strength training and 2 days of yoga. I’m using some Nutrition Tips I found in this months edition of Fitness Magazine to tweak my diet. Their recommendations include a daily diet that is about 60 percent carbs, 20 percent from lean proteins, and 20 percent from fat. Here’s the link to what the Fitness Magazine dietician and director of Nutrition Energy in New York City, Lauren Antonucci, RD, recommends. Smart Nutrition Tips for Runners
If everything goes well the rest of March, I should be in a good position to really kick the final eight weeks of training before I hit race day in June. One of my Mamavation Sistas told me I should definitely put in the training before I run this Half Marathon. I plan to take her advice. I’m sure my body will appreciate it.

MAMAVATION MONDAY: TREADMILL, THOU SHALT NOT TREAD ON ME!!!

As a long time Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan, of course I’ve dreamed of fighting Dragons and warding off alien invaders. In my head, I’m an awesome warrior princess, like Xena, but with cuter shoes. In Fantasyland, I’m an expert marksman, a master swordsman, and fluent in the Martial Arts. I’m one bad momma.

But in real life I’m having trouble overcoming my own inner struggles. How am I to defeat hordes of demons, if I can’t even defeat my inner demons long enough to train for a Marathon?
And it’s not even the full Marathon. It’s just a Half Marathon, part of the Team Ortho Minneapolis Marathon happening June 6th, 2010. When I registered for it last year, it seemed like a great idea. Something exercise related that I could train for in my own time, around my busy work and family schedule. It seemed like an accomplishment that I could be proud of. Something I could knock off my “Bucket List.” It seemed like a LONG time away.
It’s not. “104 days, until the Start!” Yesterday when I checked the website for the Minneapolis Marathon, that’s what I saw. And panic started to set in.
I thought by now, I’d like running more, but it’s still a drag. It’s been really hard for me to motivate myself to hit the treadmill. Last week was the first time, since signing up for the race, that I didn’t run at all. I thought about going. I PLANNED on going, but then when the time came, I never did it. I let the excuses stack up: I’ve been busy at work. Had lots of comedy shows. Needed to spend more time with my husband and toddler. I was tired. It’s been too cold. Blah. Blah Blah.
This week, I’m going to get myself back on track. I’m committing to logging at least 12 miles this week. Plus I’m going to continue my cross-training with my Kettleworx and weight training at least 2 days this week. I also asked some friends who run a lot more than I do for some tips on beating the treadmill boredom, so I’m going to try their suggestions and really work on my attitude about running. As additional motivation, I taped my Registration Confirmation card to my screen at work, to help keep training top of mind.
My diet has been a little carb heavy lately, so I’m switching it around to include more protein and upping my hydration goals to at least 80 ounces of water a day.
I’m sure Xena could run a marathon, so I’m determined to finish this race. I got to be in shape if I’m going to protect my kingdom, evil hordes have a lot of energy. If you hear the yell of a Warrior Princess coming from the treadmills, it’s probably me.

MAMAVATION MONDAY – GUESS WHO’S DOWN A PANTS SIZE?

Yesterday during our Big Game Pre Party, we were talking to our friends and trading fitness stories. It is really nice to have another couple that understands how hard it is sometimes to make healthy lifestyle choices.
I mean, we all know how delicious pie is, right? Armed with that knowledge, how am I expected to pass it up? :0 It’s good to see that the baby steps that my husband and I have made over time have really paid off. I’ve been able to maintain my weight loss, and my hubby is now officially down a pants size. (And the crowd goes wild.)

My husband’s latest contribution to our Family’s Fitness was to post one of our “fat family pictures” up on our refrigerator. It shows all three of us at his brother’s wedding a while back and trust me, the only one who looks cute chubby, is the baby. Looking at the photo before you open the fridge does make you think twice about whether we really want to cram any tasty, but unnecessary snacks into your pie hole.

This week is going to be a long one. With more snow in the forecast, it’s hard to get motivated to hit the gym. So to stave of the chunkies, I’m already planning on doing my in home work outs including Kettleworx and Turbo Jam. Plus we’re going to be really healthy this week with our eating including this new recipe for

Chicken with Honey-Orange Sauce. (Recipe – ACE Healthy Recipes – American Council on Exercise)

Stay warm everyone and stay healthy.

MAMAVATION MONDAY – THE ’80 ARE BETTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND

Last Friday, some friends and I went to a charity event for Big Brothers, Big Sisters called Glitter Ball.” The whole thing was a fantastic homage to the 1980’s and some of the most creative people in the Twin Cities brought out the leg warmers, ratted hair and bright eye shadow. It was like TOTOLLY AWESOME.
I looked through the photos and I’ve got to say, I think I look much cuter now that I did back in the real 1980’s.
Yeah, back then I was about at tall as I was round, and had one of those totally unflattering “mushroom” style haircuts that were in style. I looked like a chucky version of “Tootie from “The Facts of Life” or as lots of people also used to remind me, I was a really good double for “Arnold from Different Strokes.” (Not really what a grade school girl wants to hear, right?)
So the healthy changes in diet and exercise that I have made over the years have finally have started to pay off. If I could go back in time and swap out a few photos, I like totally would.

Seeing these new pix are definitely good motivation for me to get in my 12 miles on the treadmill this week and to keep up with my food journal. I’ve been great at it today, but admittedly it is only Monday.

Can somebody get me a time machine please? I need to go back and give chucky 1980’s me a few healthy pointers.

Mamavation Monday – Saying NO to OCB!!! Plus Healthy Recipe

After church on Sunday at the request of my Hubby. He has a nostalgic soft spot for OCB, it’s that thing that you know is bad for you, but you still love mostly because it brings back great childhood memories when you eat it. I totally understand since I have a similar weekness for Totino’s pizza.

But after we got there I remembered why we stopped going to places like that. It’s so hard to find anything that’s not covered in sauce or stuffed full of salt. I felt bad letting our toddler eat most of the stuff on the menu. If you’re like my husband, who already has problems with portion control, you might as well just pack the pounds on the minute you walk in the door. I’m constantly telling him that he eats to fast, so his body doesn’t have time to register that he’s full before he’s stuffed himself to capacity like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Before we started eating, Hubby was so excited, because he said it was his “Cheat Day.” Then the cheating began.
After brunch we got back in the car, and hubby said, “You’re gonna make fun of me.
I said, “Why.”
He says, “I’m stuffed.”
He was right; I made fun of him the whole ride home.

When we got home, he passed out on the couch, I’m sure all the teasing I gave him in the car wore him out. But the Toddler and I got some play time in and he even helped me do my Kettleworx Workout. (I call him hanging on my leg “helping”.)

To help make up for the junk food cheat day, I found a new recipe that I’ll be making this week. It’s Black Bean and Mushroon Chilli. It’s healthy and because you can put in the Crock Pot, it’s really easy and convenient. If you try it, please let me know.

Plus, if you haven’t signed up for my Kettleworx Starter Workout Kit, you still have time this week.  Just sign up via my last week’s post.

Along with watching my diet I plan to log at least 10 miles on the treadmill as I start to get ready for the Half Marathon I’m running in June. One trip to OCB isn’t going to kill us, but I’m glad we don’t do this everyday. My waistline and marriage couldn’t handle it.

MAMAVATION MONDAY – 50 POUNDS I DON’T MISS PLUS GIVEAWAY

50 pounds!!! That’s what I gained during my pregnancy. As someone who was really into sports and fitness it was a disheartning, so after I had the baby I was determined to get back to my pre-baby weight. I gave myself a a year. I figured it took almost a year for me to gain the weight, so a year was a good goal to get it off.
But, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be. As I started my weightloss project in earnest I realized I couldn’t do all the things I I’d before. Pre baby all my hobbies were sports related. I played footbal. I played soccer. I taught aerobics part time. Now I was a new mom with dayjob and a stand up comedy career to work on. When was I going to find time to go to the gym?

That’s when I began using home workout DVD’s. I tried a bunch and a lot of them sucked, but two in particular were my favorites. First I fell in love with Turbo Jam. The instructor Chalene Johnson became my video best friend while I jammed away those pounds. After I lost the majority of the weight my focused changed so my new DVD favorite is Kettleworx. So as I am proud to say they put me in the latest Kettleworx Informercial. I’ve posted that clip along with one of my comedy clips as a little “before and after.” [I’m about 30 seconds in :)]

After looking at both videos I’m glad that I’m still funny but a lot less fat.

My freinds over at Kettleworx are giving a starter set to give away to one of you lucky folks.
