Birthdays and Beginnings

3.12.17

Mommie Dommie Birthday Pics
Miss Shannan and Cyclone Kid Birthday Month 2017
March is “Birthday Month” at our house. Cyclone Kid turned 9 at the beginning of the month. I’ll hit 44 at the tail end of March. A month of celebrations and a month of “annual check-ups,” as well.
Physicals for both of us, and I learned few things. We’re both happy. We’re both healthy. But, we’re both a little “heavy.”
Even though Cyclone Kid and I are active people, we weren’t active enough to stave off the winter weight gain. As the mom, I let us slip and now we’ve got some ground to make up to get our Body Mass Index in check and get back into shape.
Goals are great. Realistic goals are better. Over the next 6 months I have two weight-related goals for us:
  • For Cyclone Kid: Keep him at his current weight, so he can “Grow Into It.”
  • For Me: Lose 8 pounds and gain muscle.
I’m not telling him he’s on “diet,” or that he needs to lose weight. I’m not making a big deal about using the word “exercise.” For the next six months, I’ll find new, fun ways that we can be more active and get in better shape.
Remember, I said, HE’S HAPPY. My main concern is to keep him that way. Happy. Healthy. Confident. Just a little less “heavy.”
It will be an interesting adventure.

TINY TALES OF AUTISM – CALL YOUR LOCAL CONGRESSMAN

image

Cyclone Kid and I are usually full of cute stories and funny accounts of life along the Autism Spectrum, but today we could use your help with something.

We’re working with Autism Minnesota in support a bill currently being considered by the Minnesota Legislature. The bill called “HF3172” includes provisions that will insure that Minnesota children with Autism can continue to access medically necessary therapy without their parents being required to face overwhelming costs or unreasonable bureaucratic barriers to proven treatments for their children.  These provisions can all be made into law without any further cost to the state by utilizing funds that have been allocated to the Governor’s Autism benefit which has already been approved.

There are ten law makers that sit on the Omnibus Supplemental Budget Bill Conference Committee and it important it is important that these 10 individuals hear from as many people as possible via phone and/or email voicing your support for the HF 3172 Autism Provisions prior to their meeting at 4:30pm on Monday, April 28th.  All you need to do is email or call with the message:

“Please support all of the HF 3172 Autism Provisions.  Minnesota children with autism are counting on you to adopt these crucial changes to state law to ensure that they can have a chance at a brighter future.”

You can find additional information at http://www.autismminnesota.org.

I’ve listed the contact information for the 10 committee members below. So if you could spare a moment to contact one of them on behalf of Cyclone Kid and the other Minnesota kid’s with. Autism we would greatly appreciate it.

I WOULD ROCK THIS – ROBOT SUIT

You know what I need? For real, do you you know what I really need? A robot suit. I’ve put some thought into this, and I think a lot of the world’s woes could be solved by one awesome woman in her robot suit.

I would trade in my current car, all my future cars and figure out a way to go back in time and trade in every car that I’ve ever owned in the past, just for one of these robot suits featured in this video. Why is life so unfair?

If any mad scientists out there are looking for test pilots, feel free to hit me up on Twitter. Its @MissShannan. I’m willing to travel and have excellent reflexes. Plus I’m pretty tiny, so it could be a small robot suit to cut down on the initial production costs.

So far, I’m not seeing much of a downside to this particular plan, so feel free to give me a shout in a week or two when you’ve worked out the details.

MAMAVATION MONDAY – HEALTHY LIVING: A FAMILY AFFAIR

My sister is pissed off at me. She thinks I’m mean and irrational. Maybe I am, because I snapped on her. Oh yes I did. A full on “Sista Girl” episode at 9:30 am on a Tuesday morning. Why? Because she was feeding my 2 year old, her precious nephew, Chili Cheese Corn Chips.

You might have Corn Chips for breakfast, but we don’t. And there she was giving him one after another like and old lady feeding popcorn to pigeons. When I made her stop, he freaked out. Of course, he wanted more. They are DELICIOUS. Explaining moderation to a 2 year old is impossible, so now he was mad, I was mad, my sister was mad. I snapped on her and now she thinks I suck.
She’s one of those “Skinny/Fat” people. You know the ones that can cram all sorts unhealthy fattening food into their faces and never seem to have any consequence. She can eat anything she wants, but I’ve never been that person. My husband isn’t that person, and so far we have no indication that our son will be that person. And why risk it? He doesn’t need to eat that stuff anyhow. I’m sure the junk food industry has plenty of other fans to profit from.

At our pediatrician’s recommendation we recently switched him to skim milk. We work hard to get his dietary recommendations in throughout the week and to make sure that he is learning to love healthy snacks not just junk. We’re enjoying that sweet spot right now, where junk food ignorance is bliss. Our kid doesn’t know that candy and cookies are delicious. He likes healthy food right now because he doesn’t know anything else is out there. So seeing my sister sabotaging our efforts was just too much.

The other night when Dom decided to wake mama up at 2 am. I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I started reading the book sent to me from the Mamavation Sistahood, “Growing Up Healthy The Next Generation Way” by Dr. Mary Ellen Renna. Along with some outstanding diet and exercise information that I found really helpful, she says during the introduction, “There is now an overall decline in the health of the present generation of children in the U.S.” and that “People around the world are exposed to more and more nutritionally deficient foods, creating an increasingly unhealthy population.” Do you think Chili Cheese Corn Chips would make that “nutritionally deficient food” list? I sure do.

Maintaining a healthy diet is going to stay a key focus in our house. It’s working for us so far, so we have no reason to jump off the healthy eating train. This week is going to be really busy because I have comedy shows, plus a major event going on at work, so I’m just going to try to stay hydrated, eat as clean as I can and just focus on running this week. To stay on track with my Half Marathon training I need to log 17.5 miles this week, so that’s the workout goal I’m shooting for.
Dom has forgotten about the Corn Chips for now. My sister, well, her memory is a little longer, but since she’s 19, I think taking her shopping might help her get over our little spat. I’m not above a little sisterly bribery.

See ya in the produce isle.
